The saving to the public of the Monte dei Paschi of Siena must be evaluated with great caution, because many issues remain still open. To say, in an interview to Bild in its issue of tomorrow, it is Jens Weidmann, governor of deutsche Bundesbank. “For the measures provided for by the Italian government, the bank must be financially sound in his heart. The money can not be used to cover losses which have predictable”, said Weidmann, who is considered one of the hawks within the Ecb.
“We have established new ground rules. These are aimed mainly at the protection of the taxpayers and to induce the investors to responsible behaviour. Public money must be regarded as the last resource, for this the bar is placed very high”. Weidmann added that if, in spite of everything, were pouring public money for the bailout, “this will have to be refinanced, due to the large number of Italian public debt”.
