“This is not over. We have evidence of new scandals. Other banks will be involved. ” Hervé Falciani, the man on the list of HSBC, is not content with the world clamor raised by the publication of the names of tax evaders in the newspapers of 45 countries (Italy for the weekly L’Espresso) coordinated by the International Consortium investigative journalists (ICIJ) . The investigation launched worldwide by the media across the world is causing jolts judicial and political, but Falciani – reached on the phone while in France – already thinking about the next steps. The fight to the opacity of the financial system has become his mission.
So should we expect news in the coming months?
Yes. We have created an international platform to help “throwers of alert”, people who like me and like so many others decide to denounce the illegal situations they witness. In the US they are called whistleblowers and are protected by law. Well, the platform, which is called Pila (Plateforme internationale de protection des Lanceurs d’alerte), is already bearing fruit. We are in contact with people who have provided evidence of other scandals that will become public domain and which will also cover the banking sphere. We are working with the French unions, with some African countries and with the authorities of Belgium. We are creating an international network that also includes Spain.
The leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, in these hours than ked publicly with a tweet to the decision to work with his party. I have a meeting with them shortly, through Skype because they are in France. In Spain there is a political experience that is emerging with Podemos, but there is also a community, that of X-Net, which has agreed to a change in the country and working with Podemos on certain projects but not there is agreement on everything. I’m trying to start a collaboration with Syriza in Greece. With them we have a chance to change things. The initiatives are designed at European level.
You have lived for years under protection and cooperated with prosecutors and tax authorities of different countries. In all that time he has never publicly revealed the names of the account holders of HSBC. What effect do you think the spread of the lists in the newspapers of half the world?
My goal was never to make known the names but to make it clear that there is an industrial system that within large private banks work around the rules. It is a system that is very familiar with the laws and that for this can avoid them. And it does so at all levels. The names circulated in recent days show that the system not only involves celebrities, entrepreneurs and professionals but concerns very large social groups. So, if governments reduce the means to combat tax evasion this will mean that you will have more chance to get around the rules.
