In Italy there are over 3.6 million people who would be available to work but not seeking employment: 14.2% of the labor force, more than three times the average EU-28 (4.1%). Detects the Eurostat in a study on the third quarter of 2014 according to which this percentage increased on a trend basis in the EU and by 0.2 points in Italy by 1.1 points.

The data on people who ‘do not seek but are available’ (including the discouraged) is 14.2% more than three times the EU average (4.1%). The situation is likely to worsen in the last quarter because according to Istat the unemployed were more than 3.4 million in both October and November (the data on inactive available to work instead is only quarterly). In Italy not only unemployment is higher on average than in Europe (in November to 13.4% compared to 11.5% of the Eurozone and 10% in EU 28), an increase of almost a point over the previous year but the gap is huge on ” workforces potential ” with more than 3.6 million people in the third quarter of 2014 who do not seek employment but are ready to work (14.2% of the total compared to 4.1% of the average in the EU). These are people considered inactive (have not done research work in the four weeks preceding the survey) also because of distrust in the possibility of being able to find work but available for possible use. In Europe, the percentage of these people has increased by 0.2 percentage points while in Italy increased by 1.1 points. In Germany, the overall percentage of those who do not seek work but available is still 1.2% but also in Greece with unemployment over 25% of this area is stable at 1.9%. Italy on this data is split in two with a percentage of 6.5% in the North (close to the European average) and South sinking with 30.7% (100 out of the labor force aged 15 to 74 years) who do not seeking employment while being available to work (almost 48% among women).
