Publishing lighthouse Antitrust acquisition of RCS Libri by Mondadori – The Messenger

The acquisition of RCS Libri by the Mondadori ends in the viewfinder Authority. The Authority for Competition has decided to initiate an investigation to determine whether the transaction will result in the creation or strengthening of a dominant position in the markets that make up the publishing industry in Italy.

According to Antitrust, this transaction further industry consolidation is part of a market environment particularly concentrated and vertically integrated, it said in a statement. Already today, in fact, about 60% of the publishing market “varied” in Italy is represented by five major groups (Mondadori, RCS, GEMS, Feltrinelli and Giunti) all feature, although to varying degrees, from vertical integration in ‘ whole publishing industry in the face of quite a large number of medium and small publishers are not integrated. In the above context, Mondadori and RCS Libri appear as the closest competitors. The two groups are the main publishers of “changes” in Italy, ranking among the top five players in all markets of the publishing sector, and hold positions of particular importance in the markets of fiction and nonfiction, and e-books . The operation, besides being able to produce harmful effects on the conditions of supply of publications to readers, appears to reduce the choice of the authors and a worsening of negotiating with them practiced, explains the Guarantor.

Based on these conditions, the Antitrust Authority’s investigation will verify the extent to which this can lead to the creation or strengthening of Mondadori in the following markets: the acquisition of copyrights of books Italians and foreigners fiction and non-fiction; the publishing of books of fiction and non-fiction; the publishing of children’s books, comic book publishing, publishing and distribution of e-books. The survey AGCM will consider also the effects of the downstream markets: that of the distribution of books “varies” to large retail, the retail of books “varies” and that of the online retailing of publications. The investigation will be concluded within 45 days as of 21 January 2016. To these should be added to the 30 days required to obtain the opinion of the Communications Authority.
