The premier greek Alexis Tsipras has had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande. This was reported Bloomberg citing government sources in Athens. The three leaders agreed to a meeting on Wednesday 10 June in Brussels. The news comes after the latest developments on the negotiations to reach an agreement on the granting of a new tranche of aid to Greece and thus to avoid a default. Friday Alexis Tsipras has called in front of the Hellenic Parliament absurd and unrealistic proposal made by creditors. After this stop in Athens, according to some sources, the EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker refused to talk on the phone with the greek prime minister. According to sources of irritation Juncker definitely also stemmed from not being informed in advance of the decision to postpone the end of the month the payment is due to the IMF and the undiplomatic expressions used by Tsipras to define, in front of the Greek parliament, the compromise proposal developed by former Troika, ie EU, ECB and IMF. However, Athens has denied that Junker has refused to talk to the premier greek.
Waiting for the face to face
At first it had spread the news that he had asked to meet with Tsipras Juncker already Sabbath, before participation of President of the Commission to the G7 held from Saturday night in Germany. An event where the solution of the Greek crisis, strongly supported by the United States, will be among the topics at the center of talks between Merkel, Hollande, Renzi, Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk. The information gathered in Brussels indicate instead that a new face-to-face Juncker Tsipras, perhaps expanded to the president of the Eurogroup Jeron Dijsselbloem – as happened last Wednesday – might still take place next Tuesday. Ie on the eve of a summit between the EU and Latin American countries that will converge on the Belgian capital many heads of state and government, also on the European side. This will continue in parallel while technical contacts between the parties to try to define the content of an agreement which, to a very surprising given the context, yesterday in front of the Parliament Tsipras said “never been so close.” Our proposal “remains on the table” has said in the evening the government of Athens and “we await answers from counterparts.”
