NEW YORK (WSI) – Amounts to approximately € 250 billion euros, equal to 12,9% of the national wealth, the underground economy that escapes the tax man. And who has nothing to hide, struggling to get used to electronic money: banknotes 87 trade on 100.

Are some of the figures listed today, from Ettore Livini on Republic in an article that describes how Italy is a country that is still using too much cash, and very often do so to escape the Tax.

As you can read in the article:

The obligation of Pos to merchants, the roof to 3 thousand euro for operations in the currency and the boom of the online purchases were not enough to undermine the historical distrust of the tricolor for the electronic money: credit cards, atm & c. have the defect of leaving the fingerprints of the seller and the buyer on each transaction, transforming it into an open book for the sharp-eyed inspectors of the tax office. And so, not surprisingly, we are the Cinderella of Europe for the use of this payment instrument with the misery of 30.1 transactions per year.

The result were the phenomena at the limit of the paranormal currency as the incredible story of the 500 euro notes. Banned by the Ecb from 2018, because the secret weapon of organized crime and tax evaders (in a single pack of cigarettes there are a total of 22 thousand euro). The Italy of the black spread seemed to have a kind of printing of illegal currencies of this cut. In 2014 – the last year for which data are available – the banks have delivered to their clients of 83 million equivalent in 500 bills. In the same 12 months the italians have filed for 9 billion.
