Italy (and the eurozone) still in deflation but slight signs of recovery – Il Sole 24 Ore

Italy and the eurozone are still in deflation in March, with prices slumping 0.2% in the peninsula than last year, according to Istat provisional data. But the statistical note «slight signs of recovery institution.” On a monthly basis, inflation returns in fact on the rise after two consecutive declines, while on an annual basis, the 0.2% decline following the -0.3% in February. Deflation was mainly affected by new declines in energy products and in particular those not regulated as fuels (-11.2%, from -8.5% in February).

The Mayor, who has the data released today, attributes the persistence of the downward trend of the further decline in energy prices and in particular energy unregulated (-11.2%, from -8.5% the previous month) .L’inflazione acquired for 2016 amounted to -0.4% (from -0.6% in February).

Even the Eurozone remains in deflation in March, but the rate increases and changes to -0.1% compared to -0.2% in February, according to Eurostat’s flash estimate. Looking at the main components, the services have the highest rate (1.3%, 0.9% in February), followed by food, alcohol and tobacco (0.7% in February, 0.6%), non-industrial energy products (0.5% in February, 0.7%) and energy (-8.7%, -8.1% in February). (

Shy positive signals from Transport and Food
The fall of energy is accompanied by a substantial turnaround with regard to the prices of transport-related services (+ 0.5%, from -0.7% in February) and other light signals shooting recorded by the prices of certain types of products (unprocessed food, durable goods and semi-durable, recreational, cultural and personal care), which however, have only helped to reduce the amplitude of the overall index decline.

Thinking in terms of “shopping basket”, ie all the prices of food products, for the care of the house and of the person, the Institute of statistics for March indicates a decrease of 0.1% compared to February and by 0.3% yoy (from 0.4% the previous month). The prices of the high frequency of purchase products increase by 0.1% in quarterly terms and decreased by 1.1% in terms of trend (was -0.8% the previous month).
