The Spanish Abertis enters the Italian motorway market ensuring 51.4% of A4 Holding , which controls the highways A4 in the section Brescia-Padua and Rovigo A31 – Piovene Rocchette . The signing had already arrived in August 2015, but details of the operation were announced only on May 10 by a statement from the Spanish company. The agreement reached by the Spanish group with Intesa Sanpaolo , Astaldi and Tabacchi family provides that the Spanish pay a total of 594 000 000 € 51% of the company. The overall assessment, therefore, is around 1.2 billion euro. The transaction, which will be adjusted in January of 2023 apart from an advance of 5 million payable “within the next few months”, is subject to the green light from the Italian government on the extension dell’A31 .
A4 Holding manages the stretch to three lanes the A4 side gear known as La Serenissima , which connects the city of Brescia and Padua . This is the third highway to traffic volume in Italy, with an Average Daily Traffic index of 91 thousand vehicles. The highway A31 (Autostrada della Valdastico), which extends over a length of 89 km, can count on an average daily traffic of 12,000 vehicles, is divided into two sections: the Vicenza-Piovene Rocchette 36 km and Vicenza-Badia Polesine of 53 kilometers. The contract license of both highways – A4 and A31 – expires in 2026.
With the acquisition of the two highways, the Abertis Group ago therefore, its entry into the Italian motorway sector, increasing its position as a leader in the industry internationally, with more than 8500 km of motorways under management . From the financial point of view, the acquisition of two assets will enable Abertis to consolidate in its financial statements about 610 million euro of revenue and about 200 million euro of EBITDA annually.
to the Spaniards it is not the first attempt to enter into force in the Italian motorway sector. Nine years ago it was announced the merger with Autostrade for Italy by the Benetton family. The government Prodi blocked the operation: the then Infrastructure Minister Antonio Di Pietro stood sideways denying authorization. In 2009, then, after the disappearance of Marcellino Gavio Abertis he tried to conquer the Sias Torino-Milano offering 1.3 billion. Without success.
