MILAN – “E ‘unacceptable that in the world there are still more than a billion poor.” He says bluntly the Bank of Italy governor Ignazio Visco. And it does so on the day which consumes the most serious tragedy linked to immigration ever happened in the Mediterranean Sea: 700 deaths a boat overturned. People fleeing hunger, misery and war, among the poorest and most desperate of the Earth. Speaking in Washington at the Development Committee – the Board of Governors of the World Bank – Visco calls for more efforts to target and focus their funding in the worst-hit areas of the planet, where millions of people still live without access to running water or drinking water, no toilets, no possibility of a future for the wars and the growing scourge of terrorism. “The World Bank – says the gvoernatore Bankitalia – should play a unique role in making available resources where there are no other financial institutions: in the poorest countries and regions affected by conflict.” In short, an institution must become even more effective in fighting poverty. Of course, the central banker acknowledges that in recent years “considerable progress has been made in reducing extreme poverty, but many countries are left behind, and we can not stop.” The appeal is also contained in the final communiqué the Development Committee, urging the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to work harder “to give significant support, where possible, to most countries in turmoil, such as the Middle East and North Africa.” Countries where wars and terrorism have worsened the economic and social conditions, increased the suffering of the civilian population and pushed up dramatically the number of refugees and immigrants who try desperately to land on the other side of the Mediterranean. A call to greater efforts in the fight against poverty also comes from the World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, who urges to speed on the road to reducing the number of people living in need in the most backward countries. The details of its establishment portray a difficult reality. Among these, one that indicates how in the world there are 800 million people who go to bed hungry every night. “Put an end to world hunger, malnutrition of children may have an impact on other important issues.” Not least that the extent of the flow of migrants to Europe, for example, or to the United States from the countries of South America. The World Bank is committed to accelerating also universal access to finance, lens 2020.
“More than 700 million people – explains Kim – had access” to financial instruments between 2011 and 2014, and this is a proof of the fact that our goal for 2020 is available ” .
