(AGI) – Apparently the malaise of some finance ministers of the Eurogroup to Varoufakis has produced some changes in the management of the negotiations between Athens and its creditors.
According to the Greek press the Premier Tsipras, in order to resolve the prolonged stalemate that is threatening the future of Greece, would have made a reshuffle in the team of negotiators. At the head of the new team there would be Deputy Foreign Minister Tsakalotos Euclid, a great friend of Tsipras and well seen by Brussels for its moderate tone. George Chouliarakis, who teaches at the University of Manchester, will be Chairman of the Economic Council with the task of managing the negotiations in Brussels. Chouliarakis is seen as a more moderate political predecessor Nikos Theocarakis, he also accused of stonewalling during the past negotiations. As for Yanis Varoufakis, the Greek Minister of Finance remains the team though, as also explains the Greek press, its function has been weakened (tested some even talk of “commissioner”). According to analysts this reshuffle could indicate a willingness to Tsipras to make more concessions to the creditors in order to get 1 billion euro aid needed to pay pensions and benefits, as well as € 880 million in interest to the International Monetary Fund next to the maturation (mid-May).
