The US Navy – US Navy – relaunches of Fincantieri for the latest generation of ships. As it said in a note under the Littoral combat ship program (LCS) of the US Navy, the consortium which includes Fincantieri, through its subsidiary Fincantieri Marine marinette (Fmm), and Lockheed Martin Corporation, he was awarded, in following the exercise of the option by the US Navy, the contract for the construction of a LCS class “Freedom”, fully funded, whose delivery is scheduled for 2020. the contract provides funding for the construction of the platform, for the integration of the systems and for the testing phases. The LCS 25 will be the 11th unit of the ordered Freedom class as part of the original plan of 2010, in addition to the two LCS units delivered before 2010. The other 10 ships already delivered or in production, are: Milwaukee, Detroit, Little Rock, Sioux City, Wichita, Billings, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Minneapolis / St. Paul and Copperstown. The LCS program was awarded in 2010 to Fmm, through the partnership between Fincantieri and Lockheed Martin. The Freedom class LCS units are multi-role medium-sized units designed for surveillance and coastal defense activities, for deep water operations and for different types of missions in the field of defense against asymmetric threats (mines, submarines and fast surface unit ). According to estimates of market analysts Freedom each unit costs about $ 400 million.
