Fca: fine record 105 million calls – The Republic

A record fine of 105 million dollars. And ‘what has been imposed – reports the Wall Street Journal – by the US authorities to Fca when investigating the recall of 11 million cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the authority for road safety, is preparing to announce in the coming hours the plea agreement that, in addition to the fine, including independent monitoring to review and evaluate the actions of Fca in terms of safety. Only a few days ago, Fca intervened recalling some cars to limit the risk of hacker attacks.

The agreement also provides that the automaker may recover part of the penalty if you respect certain conditions and the repurchase by Fca of some vehicles . Repurchases of car should not include Jeep SUVs recalled because of possible risk of fire tank: Fca insists that the vehicles are safe and have the same performance of the cars competing and NHTSA ruled in May that it would not reopen the ‘ investigation of these cars.

The penalty, although records, is only a fraction – reports the Detroit News – a fine of over $ 700 million that the authorities would have required of Fiat Chrysler: under the rules force, in fact, the agency for road safety could ask Fca $ 35 million for each of the 23 recalls of cars under investigation if the NHTSA had determined that the legal requirements had not been fulfilled in each of recall campaigns.

The entire automotive industry looks to the standoff between the NHTSA and Fca, preparing to a new level of scrutiny by federal authorities. The agency Fiat and Chrysler have begun to struggle more than two years ago, when the NHTSA has required the recall of 2.7 million Jeep to the risk of fire to the tank when they were hit from behind. After a confrontation between the CEO of Fca, Sergio Marchionne, and the then president of the NHTSA Ray Lahood, the agency had dropped the demand and Fca had granted the appeal of only 1.56 million vehicles.
The sanction against Fca exceeds the 70 million sets to Honda to report any shortcomings in safety and that 35 million dollars to General Motors for not having alerted the authorities in a timely manner of the power-related problems now to more 120 dead.
